Advent Prayers

Following on our weekly ecumenical Compline in Lent, we are continuing to pray together during Advent. Once again, the weekly services will alternate between Old St. Mary’s and the church of the Resurrection. Our first service took place on 4th December and although there was a small attendance, those who took part appreciated the opportunity to pray as a community.

Night out at the Theatre

Twenty parishioners had a night out at the theatre on 30th November. St. Mary’s Choral Society production of “Into the West” was most enjoyable. We look forward to doing this again in the Spring.

Memorial Service

The parishioners of Holy Trinity, Fethard gave thanks for the life of Wyndham Hughes on 30th November. Wyndham and his Mum, Mrs Joan Johnstone, have very generously given Holy Trinity enough money to complete the repairs and renovations on the church. We are deeply grateful to them.

Old St. Mary’s

Following an inspection of roof areas that have been letting in water, the Select Vestry are initiating the necessary repairs. Our plans for the renovation of the hall are progressing well.

Remembrance

The chaplains of South Tipperary General Hospital organised a Mass for those who had
died in the hospital during the year on 28th November. The attendance was
overwhelming.

5th Sunday

Our 5th Sunday Service on 30th November took the from of an Advent Carol Service. The children sang one of the songs from their Christmas musical and parents and children read the readings. Penny Nash read her poem on Creation and the other children read the prayers they wrote in school over the last month.

Coffee Time November 2008

This was an unexpected success. Parishioners dropped in on 15th November for a cup of coffee and a chat and left donations for our hall restoration fund. We’ll being doing this again!

Clonmel Charter Celebrations

Clonmel received a charter from James I on the 14th November 1608 and on the same day 2008 Clonmel Borough Council celebrated the 400th anniversary of this event with a special meeting and civic reception. This charter gave the Borough council the right to impose taxes and levies on the citizens of Clonmel. The invited guests, Mayor and Councillors met at the Main Guard and processed to the town hall along Mitchell Street, which was lined with people wearing costumes of the time of James I. The mayor was met with a fanfare of trumpets at the Town hall and the special meeting followed. Mr Michael Ahearne gave a brief talk on the twenty-one charter granted to Clonmel and, then, members of Siamsa Cois Siuire treated us to a recital of words and music from the reign of James I. Most of the pieces were composed and written by local poets and musicians. This was a real treat!

Cemetery Extension

The Rector blessed the new extension to St. Patrick’s Cemetery on 12th November. The mortuary chapels will be renovated by the Co. Council 2009

St. Mary's Parochial Hall

The Select Vestry has committed itself to re-roofing and restoring our parish hall in the short-time rather than long-term. Our fundraising in the future will go towards getting this vital premises to our parish life into a state that will facilitate bringing life to our parish. It’s going to cost a lot, but with grants and our efforts we can do it.

Our Debt

The response to our appeal to clear the debt have been tremendous.
Thank-you to all of you have committed yourselves to helping do this so far. The shrapnel fund (filling a jam jar with your loose change) has already yielded over €500.
The balance now stands at just under €49,000 and we are close to having sufficient monies pledged to clear the debt in the proposed time.

It is important that if you have pledged to either take out a standing order or give a sum of money that you actually do so.

Thank-you!

Rural Deanery Visitations

The Rev Isobel Jackson, Rural Dean, visited us 4th November. She inspected the registers and signed them, counted and verified that all the Church Plate was where it should be, did a survey of buildings and noted repairs, renovations etc since her last visit and, at the end, expressed her satisfaction that all is in order.

Sunday School

We now have some more volunteers and, to begin Sunday School , we just need to wait for their Garda vetting to be complete. A few more volunteers would guarantee the proper and continuous running of what I believe to be an integral part of parish life. The teaching and nurturing of our children in the faith of the Church should be a three-way partnership of home, Church and school

Memorial Service

A memorial Service will be held in Holy Trinity Church, Fethard, on
Sunday, 30th November at 2.30pm. for the late Wyndham Hughes.

Table Quiz

Our table quiz was very successful with 15 tables. We were extraordinarily well supported by member of the local community. We raised €710. There appears to be
very good reaction to the decision of the Select Vestry to repair and renovate St. Mary’s Parochial Hall. Thank-you to those of you who supported this parish fundraiser.

400th Anniversary of the Charter of James I

On 14th November, Clonmel celebrated the 400th anniversary of the granting of the Charter of James I. After assembling at the Main Guard, the Mayor, Corporation and invited guests walked to the town hall where the Mayor was greeted with a trumpet fanfare. A special meeting of the Corporation followed and, then, Siamsa Cois Siuire entertained the assembly with a half-hour rendition of music and words from the time of James 1. Refreshments were served.
