Decorating Old St Marys Church Clonmel for Confirmation–

For the Confirmation Service – Saturday, 26th June from 2.00pm – It would be good if the candidates helped prepare the church.

Practice for Confirmation –

Confirmation 2010 @ Old St. Mary's Clonmel -

Confirmation Service will take place in Old St. Mary’s on Sunday, 27th June @ 3.00pm - It is hoped that all parishioners will regard this occasion as a very important day in the history of our parish and will be there in force to hear and see the candidates make their vows and be confirmed by Bishop Michael. There will be no other services in the parish on that day.

Select Vestry Meeting –

Our next meeting is on Tuesday, 7th September 2010 in Old St. Mary’s @ 8.00pm.

Friday, 11th & Wednesday, 16th June@ 8.00pm in Old St. Mary’s –
New voices are always welcome –whether you want to sit near the organ or not! We practise well known hymns etc and learn new ones.

St. Hugh’s Church, Kilvemnon –

The Select Vestry at its recent meeting resolved to ask the Bishop to remove the consecration from this church. It has lain unused for 14 years and before that, was used for some years once a year for a Harvest Thanksgiving. In my 3 ½ years here nobody has made any enquiry about this church being used.
The decision to make this request to the bishop came after some years of debate, reluctance and indecision – it is a very serious decision to make. The church, as it stands, is in remarkably good condition for such an unloved and neglected place of worship – most parishioners did not know where it is and many still do not. There is also a ruinous schoolhouse and residence on the site and a small, beautifully tended cemetery. The font is no longer in the building and the Holy Table is in a dreadful state.
The Bishop will decide when he will come to remove the consecration and, then, it is for the Select vestry to decide what it will do with the building.

Childrens’ Festival Service –

Will take place in Waterford Cathedral on Friday, 11th June 2010 @ 11.00am. The schools of Cashel, Waterford and Lismore will take part. Everybody is welcome to this annual event for which the children practice diligently for some weeks prior to the event.

Protestant Aid

Protestant Aid is a charity which provides aid to those who are in financial distress regardless of religion, background or any other categorisation. It is a Church of Ireland charity, which relies on donations from parishes or individuals for its funds. Funds are distributed through
the Church of Ireland rectors.
As with all such agencies, the recession is making enormous demands on funds and the trustees want to be in a position to help as many as possible. .
The House of Bishops has decided that Protestant Aid should seek more subscribers and that request is within the envelope in your newsletter – The smallest donation will help some family in a moment of dire need.
These envelopes have been sent to the rectors of our Church, North & South, for distribution. I do hope that as many of you as possible will respond and help to bring relief to those who really do find themselves in such difficulties as we would not wish on anybody.

The Junction Festival events @ Old St. Mary's Clonmel

Concert in Old St. Mary’s – 9th July 2010 @ 8.00pm
More details later

Bishops Appeal –

The theme for this year’s Bishops Appeal is “The Water of Life” – all
Harvest Thanksgiving collections will go to this project which seeks to
provide clean water ; especially to those on the African continent who need it so badly.

Happy Heart Walk Clonmel–

Ms Peg Rossiter led a walk around the walls of Clonmel at Old St. Mary’s on 18th May – she told us about some of the more notable people buried in the graveyard and gave a very informative talk on the old town of Clonmel. The walk ended with some refreshments in the Church and a short recital on the organ by the Rector. Thank-you to those who provided the refreshments and prepared the church for the visit.

Repairs at Old St. Mary’s Clonmel–

We are now working towards re-roofing, repairing and making St. Mary’s Hall fit for use.

To that end, there will be a series of fundraisers in the coming Autumn/Winter season. Apart from making the building fit for parish use, we also hope that we will be able to rent it out for the use of other organisations.

FUNDRAISING IN AID OF ST MARY’S HALL RESTORATION

Barbeque – Saturday, 17th July In conjunction with Lodge 44, Clonmel, a barbeque at the Rectory – €15, children free – tickets from Bob Savage or the Rector!

It is important that all parishioners contribute to our efforts – it is your hall and without it, it is difficult to really bring our parish to life

Whist Drives in Clonmel –

The season ended with 10 ½ tables, in spite of it being after the clocks were put back. The season was most successful and enjoyable. As the proceeds go towards paying our Assessment/Sustentation, it is important that parishioners give their support. Thank-you to everybody who helped with supper & prizes, played & to Bob & Anne.

Bishop’s Poster Competition –

Congratulations to Niamh Bain who won the overall prize for her wonderful collage of what the Holy Spirit means to her.

Congratulations are also due to Penny Nash whose really great interpretation won the 1st prize in the 6th class category.

The standard of artwork in our school entries was exceptionally high this year. Thank you, teachers, for the time, encouragement and effort put into so much of the extra-curricular work done in school.

Parish School Clonmel News–

Congratulations to the editors of our school newsletter who produced the 1st production sent to readers by email! – well done Timothy & Scott!

We are having a very slow response to our “Jack & Jill” project – collecting old mobile phones for charity and towards buying an inactive whiteboard for our school – the box is in Old St. Mary’s or you can give your donations to parents, teachers or pupils of our school.

To Andrew Duncan who has won a scholarship to Kings Hosptial School, Dublin – quite an achievement! Also congratulations should go to his teacher, Ms Rosemary Wallace in the Parochial School.

New Arrival –

Congratulations to Conor & Samatha Molloy on the birth of Paige, a little
sister for Tilly

Fundraising Clonmel Union of Parishes–

All fundraising events benefit us all – they also bring us together to be the
people of God at work in our parish.
In July, we will begin to put together the teams required to make the Harvest Festival of Flowers a success – it will require help from parishioners from every part of our parish – volunteers would make the task easier!!

Sustentation/Assessment –

In order to ensure that monies given by parishioners are used
for the purpose for which they are given, from now, all donations/subscriptions to this fund will be put into a separate account.
The due date for our having the monies in the diocesan account by 31st December means that many find it very difficult to write cheques or make donations to the live ministry coming up to Christmas. You may make a donation t any time that suits you, it will be recorded and you will receive an account of your giving for the year early in 2011 and you will be credited with making your donation in parish records. If your donations for any year are over €250, you may take part in the tax relief scheme, which further benefits the parish – ask the Rector or treasurer for details.

Repairs at Old St. Mary’s –

Both the areas re-roofed last month are showing signs of drying out – and there is no evidence of water coming in anymore!
The Marshall Beresford Fund has awarded us €1,600 towards the cost – we were unable to apply for a Heritage Grant due to the urgency of the works.

We have now applied to the Heritage Council for a grant to clear the bell tower of pigeon debris, repair and fix the louvres and make the tower bird-proof. There are some small repairs required on the roof as well.

St. Mary’s Parochial School

(sometimes called “The Model School)
Our school continues to be a hive activity. We are now into the last term of the academic year and those in 6th class are certainly eagerly awaiting their transition to 2nd Level education. We look forward to hearing the results of the Bishop’s Poster Competition – results are usually given to teachers at their conference with the bishop on Holy Thursday.
The Rector brushed up on her teaching skills with a day subbing in the junior room – all survived the experience!
The pupils took part in a Skipathon on 23rd April.

We have decided to take part in the project of the Jack & Jill Foundation – they collect old and recycle mobile phones and hope to collect enough to enable us to buy an interactive whiteboard – it is a spaceage blackboard that really enables teachers to present lessons in an interactive way aided by a computer. There is a box in Old St. Mary’s – for other congregations, might I suggest you give your contributions to the Rector or a parishioner, bring them to church or drop them into old St. Mary’s when in Clonmel. – we need 500 – we have 70.

Wordsearch –

This month’s is enclosed –entries may be handed into the office at Old St. Mary’s to Liz
Last month’s winners were:

1st Prize – Mr James Carrick

2nd Prize – Mr George Hogg

3rd Prize – Robert Bailey

Special Draw – Mrs Frances Stafford

Whist Drives at Clonmel–

The season ended with 10 ½ tables, in spite of it being after the clocks were put back. The season was most successful and enjoyable. As the proceeds go towards paying our Assessment/ Sustentation, it is important that parishioners give their support. Thank-you to everybody who helped with supper & prizes, played & to Bob & Anne.

General Easter Vestry –

Our General Easter Vestry, this year, was quite well attended. The best part was that we had new faces and people who were willing to serve. Our thanks goes to those who have served us so well over a number of years, but especially three people who serve as Churchwardens over and above the call of duty. Messers Brian Palmer, Rob Clifford and Bob Savage made the office their own. They did much that is not required of a Churchwarden. In Clonmel, Bob and Rob will continue to do some of those things they did when in office. We hope that Brian will continue in his great love of Holy Trinity – he beat the others to training his successor, Heather!

While some take on “formal” offices, everybody shares in the work of our parish.
In Tullaghmeelan there is no change and, in Cahir, we welcome Yvonne as Peoples’ Churchwarden and Hilary has increased her number of terms as Rector’s warden by one more.

Welcome to the newcomers to the Select Vestry and thank-you to those who are taking a well-deserved rest.
We have much to do in our parish – so, please pray for our Select vestry and do all you can to promote the unity of our parish and its welfare as best you can.

St. Paul’s, Cahir –

You will find details of forthcoming fun raisers below – please support the parishioners’ efforts to pay off their small borrowing towards paying for the re-decoration and, also, towards, building up their restoration fund towards future repairs and renovations. Old buildings are always in need of some work being done on them!

St Paul’s , Cahir Fundraisers 2010

1. “Summer Colours” – a demonstration of making hanging baskets, window baskets at Kilcoran Lodge Hotel on Wednesday, 19th May 2010 @ 8.00pm – Admission €10

2. Cake Sale with Bring & Buy & Bric-a-BracSunday, 6th June 2010

3. Harvest Festival of Flowers, St Paul’s Church 3rd – 5th September

Good news is that the painting project has benefited from a grant of €1,200 from the Marshall Beresford Fund.

4th Sunday –

The April fourth Sunday Service of the Word was attended by equal numbers of children and adults in numbers that made it obvious that we could have good congregations if children were brought to church more often.
A little noise (the reason most parents say they don’t bring their children to church) is of no consequence. All are welcome.

Holy Week & Easter –

Attendance at the Holy Week Services were very small in Cahir & Fethard but in contrast
the attendances in Clonmel were up on other years. We moved chairs up near the sanctuary so that we could be closer together and the response to this was very good.

The paschal candles were lit in the grounds of Old St. Mary’s, as is usual, on Easter Eve. Tristan Buchwald was chosen to ask the traditional question at the beginning of the ceremony and the scouts provided the fire. Once again, the congregation was larger than previous years.

Our churches were beautifully decorated for Easter Day. Thank-you to the arrangers.

Confirmation 2010, Old St Mary's Clonmel -

Confirmation Service will take place in Old St. Mary’s on Sunday, 27th June @ 3.00pm - It is hoped that all parishioners will regard this occasion as a very important day in the history of our parish and will be there in force to hear and see the candidates make their vows and be confirmed by Bishop Michael. There will be no other services in the parish on that day.

Confirmation Classes –

Scott Evans, Diocesan Youth Officer, and his three intern youth leaders led our Confirmation candidates in an evening of fun and learning. He brought the equipment for I-box and the young people had great fun. He then led them in a short activity and sat with them and told them simply why he believes and what his faith means to him. It was a Confirmation class with a difference, but, then, all our classes are so so different from what mine were years ago.

Holy Baptism –

Daphne Elisabeth Buchwald, daughter of Jens & Nadja and sister of
Tristan, Gideon & Caleb made her baptismal vows and was baptised by
the Rector on Easter Monday. Like her elder brother, two years ago, she asked to be baptised, was diligent in her classes and received her first Holy Communion in Tullaghmeelan Church on Low Sunday. May she continue to grow in faith.
