I
hope you have either taken a break or intend doing so while the long days last.
Sometimes
people wonder how clergy come to be ordained. It can be a long journey of feeling
that God is calling one to serve in this particular or it may be a spark set
alight by a friend, member of clergy or somebody else who percieves something
in a person that indicates a possible calling.
There
is always celebration when somebody offers themselves for training for
ordination. The first positive move is often a chat with the Rector.
On Saturday, 26th
August, in Shilleaglah Church, Co Wicklow, Trevor Sargent will be ordained a
Deacon by Bishop Michael. He will serve his curacy in Tullow Parish. Please pray
for him and his fellow students as they begin their life of ministry in our
church.
On
that same afternoon, The Friends of St Canice's will visit St Paul's, Cahir as
part of their outing. There will be a short Service in St Paul’s Cahir at
3.00pm.
Do
enjoy some time of leisure and relaxation in the coming weeks.

Wednesday
Weekday Service – Service at 10.30am in Old St Marys – Refreshments afterwards
Your
Prayers –
Please remember those who are unwell, at home & in hospital. At this time we need to pray, especially, for peace.
Holy Baptism – Eileen Collins, an
adult, was Baptized by the Rector in Old St Mary's on Saturday, 8th
July 2017.
On Saturday, 15th July the Rector Baptized
Layla Jade Freeman, daughter of Seamus & Rachel in the presence of family
and friends. Layla's big brother really enjoyed the ceremony and party
afterwards!
Burials – We have a number of
churchyards attached, in some cases, to redundant churches. Burials
have been taking place in these sites without being recorded by us or any
burial fees being paid. During the last month, somebody did go to the County
Council to get permission to extend a family burial plot in Ardfinnan. The Co
Council informed the lady of our ownership of the churchyard and arrangements
have been made in the proper way for the extension of the family plot.
RTE Broadcast -Early this year, I
was asked if I would arrange for a Service celebrating lay
ministry in our diocese, to be broadcast on RTE Television on Sunday 20th
August 2017 @approximately 11.00am. With the help of our new Communications
officer, Margaret Hawkins, about 35 lay people, including lay readers, who
participate actively in the parish, diocesean and national life of our church
came together and on Sunday, 30th July and recorded a Service of
Morning Prayer in the studios at Montrose in Dublin. For Margaret and myself
this involved a lot of hard work over he past months. Included in this act of
worship is a display of symbols of various aspects of Church life in our
diocese. The Service is conducted by our youngest lay reader and a variety of
people, representing most of the parishes of our diocese, read, sing and are
interviewed. For, once, I am encouraging you to turn on your television on that
Sunday morning or turn on “record” and watch later, sing-a-long and pray with
your fellow members of the Church of Ireland in the Southeast! If you wish to
worship in the parish, there is always the early Eucharist @8.30am, and Fethard
& Cahir @ 9.30am – the Service in Old St Mary's will go ahead as usual @
11.00am – I'll record the broadcast!
Bio-Diversity Project – Thank-you
to those who have supported our biodiversity project at Old St Mary's. The
churchyard has been transformed. We need more plants and more people to
maintain the beds and pots. However during the night of Saturday, 29th
July somebody stole the logs from the bug hotel!
Sunday Life -This is an hour-long
programme on TippFm which is broadcast from 7- 8am on Sunday mornings. It
usually comprises music, reading and interviews. We keep it light as most of
our listeners have just woken up!
HARVEST THANKSGIVINGS 2017 –
- Cahir – Sunday, 1st October @ 7.30pm
- Clonmel – Friday, 6th October @ 7.30pm
- Fethard – Sunday, 17th September @7,30pm – Preacher Mr Mike O'Meara
- Tullameelan – Sunday, 8th October @ 3.00pm
Please take note that churches are decorated by
parishioners for these Services and the more that take part in the actual
decorating or by providing flowers, foliage and vegetables the better. Contact
the Rector with your offers, please.
Harvest Supper – It is proposed
that we will have a Harvest Supper in Old St Mary's on Saturday evening the 16th September @ 7.30pm for 8.00pm. The date has
not been oked as yet, but it will be a two course (Main & Dessert) dinner
and the charge will be €20. The maximum number will be 40 persons. This is a
parish fundraiser and it is hoped that we can fill all seats.
Visitors – This is the time of
years when people appear at our church doors to visit or to find information about their families who once lived in South
Tipperary. Some just turn up but most make appoinments to view registers and
see where there forebears worshipped. It is important that we try to keep our
churches open so that these visitors do not return home disappointed by closed
gates and locked doors! This year is proving to be no exception! Visitors have
come from many parts of our world to see the sights in Cahir, Fethard &
Clonmel. One family came to see Tullameelan.
On 8th June a bus full of parishioners from
the eastern part of our diocese came to Cahir. As part of their visit I played
host in Cahir and at the end of my little talk, somebody suggested we sang a hymn; one of the ladies passed around the plate and collected a very
nice donation to St Paul's upkeep!!!
Feile Cluain Meala – this has begun with the cycling festival; which will
then be followed by the buskers who raise much need funds for Crumlin Hospital
and then it closes with medieval part over the weekend of 10th -13th August.
Greeting Cards – Greeting cards
with pictures of all our 5 churches are available in
each church at €2 each. The inside is blank to
facilitate personal greeting.
